Most businesses and organizations require the services of a graphic designer. Those interested in making a living in this relatively well-paying field must be competent in several essential areas, including:

1. Software Skill. Designers need experience with programs such as Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, and Sketch. It also helps to have at least basic knowledge of HTML.

2. Artistic Sense. Designers need to understand how composition and color play an important role, as well as have the ability to use different fonts effectively. They also should know how to leverage creativity to develop original ideas and catch people’s attention with their work.

3. Communication. Designers need to listen to clients’ needs, gathering data such as social and cultural details about a client’s customers, to guide the brainstorming process. Once the draft of a design is complete, good presentation skills will allow a designer to communicate his or her vision. Then the designer must be able to understand and incorporate any feedback received.
